Movement-integrated learning for regulation, engagement and access to learning

Movement-integrated learning

Movement that helps children learn.

WHEAL is a learning workstation designed to support regulation, engagement and access to learning for children and young people who benefit from movement.

The problem

Children are often asked to sit still before they are ready to learn.

For some pupils, especially neurodiverse children, sitting still can increase restlessness, overwhelm and disengagement.

What looks like distraction may actually be regulation. Their body is searching for movement so their brain can feel calm, organised and ready.

WHEAL changes the question from “How do we stop the movement?” to “How do we make movement useful?”

The WHEAL solution

Move. Regulate. Learn.

WHEAL allows children to pedal gently while reading, writing, drawing, using a tablet or completing learning tasks. Movement becomes part of the learning environment rather than a reason to leave it.

Regulation

Gentle movement may help children feel calmer, more organised and more ready to engage.

Engagement

Children can stay connected to the activity while meeting their need for movement.

Access to learning

WHEAL reduces the barrier between needing to move and needing to learn.
